Difference between Kruger National Park and the Greater Kruger National Park:
Kruger National Park:
The flagship of the South African national parks, Kruger National Park is home to an impressive number of species: 336 trees, 49 fish, 34 amphibians, 114 reptiles, 507 birds and 147 mammals (including the "Big Five", Lion, Leopard, Buffalo, Elephant and Rhinoceros)
The Government run Kruger National Park was opened in 1898 at the instigation of then-president Paul Kruger. After hunters had considerably decimated the originally rich game stock, all the land between the Sabie and the Crocodile Rivers was put under the protection of Nature Conservation to ensure the survival of the remaining animals. Only as recently as 1961 was the extended Kruger Park fenced in.
12 accommodation sites, known as “camps” are scattered though out the Kruger National Park.
Some ”camps” accommodating over between 300 - 1000 persons per night during peak holiday season.
The Greater Kruger National Park:
On the western Boundary of the Kruger National Park, lies the Greater Kruger National Park.
This area consists of Privately owned land, due to the same natural vegetation as the Kruger National Park, this privately owned land now hosts the same wild animals as the Government Owned property.
This is how the private game reserves were formed, some properties expanding over 2000 hectaches, housing a number of Private accommodation sites, known as Private Safari Lodges.
